CHAPTER 94

“Tristan!” Marin shouted.

Tristan had suddenly gone completely stiff and fallen off Firebolt and onto the ground. He lay there writhing, as if overcome with some great pain.

Hughet was there first. “What happened?”

Marin was trying to soothe Tristan in hopes of calming him, but his writhing continued. “He just went stiff and fell,” she said. ”That’s all I saw.”

“..hand,” Tristan tried to speak.

Hughet quickly grabbed Tristan’s gloved hand. There was blood oozing through the glove.

“Make room in one of the wagons,” he commanded.

Several men dismounted and began moving things around to make a space for Tristan next to Elias.

Thoral was next to Hughet.

“I can carry him,” Thoral offered.

“Tristan!” Hughet said sternly. “The pyidra! Use it now!”

“…can’t,” Tristan said weakly.

Hughet didn’t let up. “Use the pyidra. Pull yourself away. The field, up ahead. Use that for now.”

Tristan nodded slightly. Sweat ran down his brow.

“Thoral, get him into the wagon,” Hughet urged.

Thoral picked him up and carried him over to where Elias sat, a worried look on his face.

“What is happening?” asked Elias. “This crystal is glowing from inside the pouch.”

Hughet came up beside the wagon. “We need to get to the Volanari as fast as possible. There is no time to waste now.”

Tristan visibly relaxed. He opened his eyes, looking a bit dazed. “What happened?” he asked. “I saw a strange woman. Blonde and green-eyed. She asked if I was Helios.”

“Helios?” asked Hughet, startled.

Darius had come over to the wagon when he heard that name. “The youngest of Helios?”

“I don’t see how,” Hughet started to say when Elias interrupted him.

“Tristan’s mother, Celeste. She would never speak of her family. You don’t suppose….?”

“Solerin,” Tristan said. They all stared at Tristan in silence. “Solerin must be a descendent of Helios. He was my mother’s father.”

Hughet shook his head. “That cannot be. How do you know this?”

Elias looked shocked, but it made sense to him, now, that Solerin would be her father. No wonder she behaved the way she did. She hated the Ecli, but she must have loved her father.

“It was Isa that told me,” Tristan said.

“There must be some mistake,” Hughet insisted. “Solerin is too old to be a descendent of Helios. As a matter of fact, Solerin would have come into this world around the same time as Helios….”

Hughet stopped at his own words, a look of revelation on his face.

It was Darius who finished his thought for him.

“Unless Solerin is Helios.”

“Who the blue blazes is Helios?” asked a completely bewildered Thoral.

“Get these people moving,” commanded Hughet. “Ride with me, Thoral. I will explain on the way.”
